African-American Women at the Helm of Golf Sitcom Pilot Filmed In Metro Atlanta: Production of "The Clubhouse" pilot is set to begin at Sugar Creek Golf Course
DeKalb County, Georgia September 26, 2011- Angi Bones, a local TV/movie producer along with Marie Dunovant, operator of Sugar Creek Golf & Tennis, are producing what might be TV's first golf sitcom titled The Clubhouse. The speculative pilot episode will be filmed at Sugar Creek Golf Course Oct. 1-2.
"It's something that's never been done before and that always makes for good TV," said Bones who's worked on more than 50 feature films and produced more than 180 sitcom episodes in Atlanta (House of Payne, Meet the Brown's TV Series.)
The premise of the show is The Office meets Caddyshack and was written last year by local novelist and sitcom writer, Brian Egeston. Egeston is an avid golfer who plays at Sugar Creek where he met Dunovant. Marie Dunovant agreed to have the pilot filmed at Sugar Creek which is one of the most popular municipal courses in DeKalb County. "Golf's global diversity thrives at municipal golf courses. These courses are where people of all cultures and classes come to play golf," said Dunovant. Dunovant is the only African-American woman who owns a golf course management company (Sydmar Golf and Sports Management, Inc.) in the United States. Sydmar Golf and Sports Management, Inc./Sugar Creek golf course is affiliated with the National Black Golf Hall of Fame, junior golf programs and women's golf associations.
"We could have filmed at other courses in Atlanta, but we went with Marie because she caters to any and every type of golfer," said Bones. "And by her own admission, she was an underdog and a long shot, by operating a golf management company. But she did it...well."
The main character in the pilot, Kash McGovern--played by local actor Jason MacDonald--is also an underdog. The character had a chance at fame and fortune on the PGA tour, but threw it all away and is trying desperately to get back on track while working as the head golf pro at Sugar Creek while trying to keep the reigns on a diverse and quirky staff.
The cast is comprised of all local actors as is the crew, which is a nod to the booming TV and movie industry in Atlanta. Myra J., an accomplished comedienne, writer, and former host on The Tom Joyner Morning has also been casted in the pilot. Bones (producer) said her team will pitch the show to sports-themed networks such as ESPN, The Golf Channel and FOX Sports. This comedic show is intended to appeal to families.
"It's a long shot, but that's how we like it," said Bones. "Women making TV's first golf sitcom, with no studio funding, shooting outside of Hollywood, using all up-and coming actors...we're hoping for a hole in one."
DeKalb County CEO Burrell Ellis also welcomes the production of the sitcom as it will support economic development, and encourage further film-making in DeKalb County; this opportunity also runs parallel to the new Sugar Creek clubhouse scheduled to break ground this fall.
